Tips for Searching

Keyword Search
The Keyword Search button allows you to perform a general search in all fields for any catalog record online. Searches are not case sensitive. By default, keyword searches use OR as the connector between words (e.g. a search for George Washington will return records associated with George OR Washington). To search for a specific phrase, put the phrase within quotation marks (e.g. "Society of the Cincinnati"). You can also refine your search by using the following Boolean modifiers:
AND – Find records with both words by typing AND between the two words.
NOT – Include one word while excluding another by typing NOT between the two words.
* – Include all variants of a word by adding an asterisk (*), or wildcard, at the end of a word. For example, a search for paint* would come up with records containing painting, paintings, painted, etc.

Advanced Search
The Advanced Search button can help you be more specific with your search. You can search for a word or phrase within a particular search category or use multiple categories to further narrow down your search results. The search categories include Title, Artist/Creator, Date, and Place of Origin. For example, a search for sword in the Title field will return records of swords, without you having to sift through all records that include the word sword in the Description or other field (like a portrait that shows a man holding a sword or a medal decorated with crossed swords). Like keyword searches, advanced searches use OR as the default connector between words. You can refine your search by using the same Boolean modifiers and other techniques described above for keyword searching.

Random Images
The Random Images button is a great way to just browse the collection. Each Random Images page displays a random assortment of images from the records online. Click the thumbnail to view a larger version of the image.
