Description |
Oval watercolor-on-ivory portrait miniature of Friedrich Wilhelm, baron von Steuben (1730-1794), a Continental Army general during the Revolutionary War and an original member of the New York State Society of the Cincinnati, by an unidentified artist after the original by Ralph Earl (1751-1801), 19th century. Bust-length view of a man turned slightly to the proper left, with white powdered hair and pale skin. He wears the uniform of a Continental Army major general consisting of a dark blue coat with a buff collar and lapels and two gold-colored epaulets with one star each, a buff waistcoat, white shirt with neck ruffle, and black stock. He wears three medals on the proper left side of his chest, including the gold Society of the Cincinnati Eagle insignia suspended from a blue-and-white ribbon. Plain light and dark blue background. Set behind glass in an oval gilt copper case, dating from the mid-19th century, with a circular suspension ring at the top. The case is decorated with a rope design on the inner border and floral motif overall. The back side of the case is covered with engine-turned decoration in the design of broad undulating lines radiating from a plain oval at bottom center, with a raised oval opening revealing gold metallic thread resembling gold braid under a small oval cover glass. |
