Description |
Tailcoat from a diplomatic uniform owned by Larz Anderson (1866-1937), made by Davies & Son, London, 1911. Tailcoat of black or dark navy blue melton wool has elaborate gold bullion and sequin embroidery in a laurel leaf and berry design at the standing collar, chest, waistline, tails, and cuffs. The coat is lined in a beige silk and closes with metal hooks and eyes that alternate sides down the front of the collar and center front. Nine ornamental convex gold buttons with the Great Seal of the United States descend down the center front closure, with two buttons at the center back. The interior of the chest section is quilted, with a stiff linen or cotton interlining throughout. The back of the collar bears a woven label reading "DAVIES & SON, / 19 & 20 HANOVER ST LONDON, W. / N." and "5434," "R," and "Larz Anderson" written in brown ink. Label is stamped "27 SEPT 1911." The uniform also includes trousers (b), a chapeau bras, and a sword belt (d). |
