Transfer-printed earthenware (creamware) jug commemorating the visit of the marquis de Lafayette to America, made by Richard Hall & Son, Staffordshire, England, ca. 1824. Designs transfer-printed in black on a light cream-colored ground. One side of the jug bears a bust-length portrait of George Washington in an oval border, with the text "Washington" above and "His Countrys Father" below. The inscription, "First in War, First in Peace,/and First in the Hearts of His/Fellow Citizens," is located above near the rim. The other side of the jug bears a bust-length portrait of the marquis de Lafayette in an oval border, with the text "Fayette" above and "The Nations Guest" below. The inscription, "In Commemoration of the/Visit, of GEN.L. La Fayette, to/the U.S. of America, In the Year/1824," is located above near the rim. Under the spout is the Great Seal of the United States with the text "Republicans" above and "Are Not Always Ungrateful" below. The maker's name appears in script below the scene: "Ricd Hall & Son." |
