Description |
Oval watercolor-on-ivory portrait miniature of Joseph Fox (1749-1827), an officer in Lee's and Jackson's Additional Continental Regiments and the Massachusetts Continental Line during the Revolutionary War and an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Connecticut, painted by an unidentified artist, ca. 1777-1779. Sitter has brown hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion. The subject wears the uniform of a captain in Lee's or Jackson's Additional Continental Regiment, consisting of a blue coat with white facings, gold-toned buttons, and a gold-toned epaulet on the proper right shoulder; a white waistcoat with blue trim and gold-toned buttons; a white shirt with neck ruffle; and a white stock. Plain gray-brown background. Framed behind glass in an oval, gilt metal, locket-style case with carved decoration on the front outer edge and a small bail affixed at the top. The back side is plain with remnants of a later metal clasp soldered to the left and right sides. |
