Oval, bust-length watercolor-on-ivory portrait miniature of Marie-Joseph Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834), a major general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and an original member of the Société des Cincinnati de France, by an unidentified French artist, late 18th-early 19th century. The sitter is in profile, facing the proper right. He is wearing a military uniform consisting of a blue coat with gold epaulettes, a white shirt, and a black stock. He has blue eyes, light brown hair in queue wrapped in a black ribbon and long sideburns. Painted on a blue-grey neutral background. Set in oval brass frame with top ring. The back is made of tan leather and marked "General Lafayette." Housed in 20th-century leather covered case. Supposedly painted from life. |
