Description |
Oval bust-length, watercolor-on-ivory portrait miniature of Nancy McCampbell Hays by Francis Rabineau (fl. 1775-ca. 1808), 1804. Sitter's shoulders are turned slightly to the proper left, while her head faces toward the viewer. Brown hair, brown eyes, and pale skin. Wearing a light blue empire-waist dress with a scroop neck, white ruffled collar, black lace trim around the neckline, and thin beaded black trim at the elbow and around the waist with a small silver buckle on the proper right side; three-strand pearl necklace; and white bonnet with black beaded trim and a light blue bow at the top. Signed "F.R. / 1804" in dark blue or black paint at lower right next to the bust. Plain stippled light blue-gray background. In the original, American-made, oval locket-style gilt metal case with a plain thin rim. Painting is encased behind a convex oval cover glass. Back of the case is plain metal with a smaller oval opening revealing dark brown hair behind an oval cover glass. A metal hinged horizontal pin and clasp extends across the oval opening on the back. |
