Description |
Oval, bust-length watercolor-on-ivory portrait miniature of William Truman Stoddert (1759-1793), an officer in the Maryland Continental Line during the Revolutionary War and an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati of Maryland, by Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827), ca. 1778. The sitter is angled slightly to the proper right, but is looking forward. He has powdered white hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. He wears the uniform of a Maryland Continental Line infantry soldier, ca. 1778, consisting of a blue coat (with red facings, round silver-toned buttons, and red shoulder straps edged in silver lace), a white waistcoat, a white shirt, jabot, and stock, a light blue sash worn diagonally under the coat, and a round black hat turned up on the proper left side with a black feather or hair roach over the crown. On a plain blue-green background. In an oval, rose gold-over-copper locket-style case with a wide rim, bail at the top, and modern replacement cover glass. On the back side, a wide rim surrounds an oval window containing a plat of woven light brown hair with the gold initials "WTS" over top. The window is covered with glass. |
