Description |
Rectangular, full-length oil-on-canvas portrait of Ambassador and Mrs. Larz (Isabel) Anderson painted by Philip A. de László (1869-1937) at Anderson House, March 1926. Both figures are seated on velvet-draped settee, turned slightly to the proper left. Isabel is looking to the proper right, eyes turned away from viewer. Larz is looking straight out at the viewer. Gold-colored tapestry in the background, plain brown floor, red drapery panel on the right. Isabel has short, wavy dark hair, parted on left and brown eyes. She wears soft red lipstick, emerald and diamond-drop earrings, and a full-length, black gown that has a low neckline, sheer, patterned sleeves, and a v-shaped bodice. On her proper left breast she wears assorted insignia, including the French Croix de Guerre and foreign Red Cross awards. Her proper right foot is forward, revealing her sheer light-colored stocking and black shoe with rectangular gold buckle. Her hands are resting on her lap, holding a white rolled diploma. Larz has brown eyes, thinning gray hair brushed back, heavy gray eyebrows, and a curled mustache. He wears a black tuxedo, white shirt and tie, pearl studs, black stockings, and dress shoes. A Society of the Cincinnati Eagle insignia is suspended on a blue and white ribbon around his neck. He has a dark red sash across his chest and diplomatic medals on his proper left lapel. His proper right elbow is bent and his hand holds his lapel. His proper left arm is resting on his knee revealing the plain gold wedding band on his hand. Signed "de Laszlo 1926" in the lower left of the canvas. In a rectangular gilt wood frame (b). |
