Description |
"The Historiscope: A Panorama & History of America" is a scrolling set of hand-colored lithographs set into a theatrical background made by Milton Bradley & Co., Springfield, Mass., ca. 1868-1890. The scroll of lithographs is wound around two vertical wooden dowels with metal handles, all of which is set into a cardboard box with an open back and decorated on the front with a printed theatrical backdrop with audience members on the sides. Twenty-four scenes are included, twelve of which relate to the American Revolution: 1. American Indians gathered in front of teepees dressed as bulls and bears 2. Christopher Columbus landing in the West Indies, 1492 3. Discovery of the Mississippi River by Hernando de Soto, 1541 4. Discovery of the Hudson River by Henry Hudson, 1609 5. Pocahontas saving John Smith at Jamestown, ca. 1608 6. Landing of the Pilgrims in Massachusetts, 1620 7. View of colonial New York City (then New Amsterdam), 1624 8. William Penn's Treaty with the Indians, 1683 9. Roger Williams with the Narragansett Indians, ca. 1637 10. A "palisaded" house to protect against Indians 11.
