Description |
Oval bust-length, watercolor-on-ivory portrait miniature of William Henry Bruce (1752-1825), an officer in the Maryland Continental Line during the Revolutionary War and original member of the Society of the Cincinnati of Maryland, by Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827), ca. 1777-1780. Sitter's shoulders are turned slightly to the proper right, with white powdered hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. Face and hair are now bluish in color due to a fugitive pigment used by the artist. The sitter wears a military uniform of the Maryland Continental Line consisting of a dark blue coat with red facings, silver-colored buttons, and a silver-trimmed red epaulet on each shoulder; a while waistcoat; and a white shirt, jabot, and stock. Plain greenish-blue background. In the original oval gilt metal locket-style case with a plain narrow edge, cover glass, and slightly tapered bail at the top. On the back side, a large oval opening reveals a plat of woven dark and light brown hair behind a cover glass. |
