Description |
Oil-on-canvas painting of a Pensioner of the Revolution by John Neagle (1796-1865), 1830, in a wood frame (b). (The artist identified the subject as Joseph Winter, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, and originally titled the painting "Mendicant.") Waist-length portrait of an elderly gentleman turned three-quarters towards the viewer, looking straight on. He wears a tattered coat, with visible repair patches at the proper right shoulder and sleeve, and a blue shirt or scarf. He holds a walking stick in his proper right hand and an upturned hat in his left. His hair and beard are long, grey, and unkempt. Wrinkles are prevalent in his face and he wears a forelorn expression. The upper area of the portrait is dark brown, negative space. |
