Description |
Circular, bust-length watercolor-on-ivory portrait miniature of Amelie-Maxime-Rosalie de Grasse (d. 1799) and Melanie-Veronique-Maxime de Grasse (d. 1799), daughters of French naval officer François-Joseph-Paul, comte de Grasse, marquis de Tilly (1722-1788), possibly by Geslain, ca. 1796-1802. The two sitters face forward to the viewer. Both are shown with arching brows, large dark eyes, small mouths, and pale complexions. The subject on the proper right has light curly hair pulled back from the face and left to hang free. Her gown is topped by a large sheer muslin collar or fichu and there is what appears to be a round dark buckle or brooch beneath it. The subject on the proper left has dark hair pulled back from the face with a light ribbon worn as a headband. She wears an empire waisted brown gown with visible white chemis with a standing collar slightly folded. The background is a light sky blue. In a square black wood frame with a circular gilt copper bezel at the opening. The number "30" is stamped faintly on the back side in the top left corner. |
