Description |
Oval, bust-length watercolor-on-ivory portrait miniature of George Baylor (1752-1784), an officer in the Continental Dragoons during the Revolutionary War and an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia, painted by Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) in the spring of 1778 at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The sitter has powdered white hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. He wears the military uniform of a colonel in the Continental Army, consisting of a white coat (with dark blue facings, silver buttons, and a silver epaulet on each shoulder), a white shirt, jabot, and stock, and a dark-colored sword belt with a silver buckle visible underneath the coat. Plain blue shaded background. The painting has an overall bluish tone resulting from a fugitive pigment common in Peale miniatures. In an oval gold, locket-style case with an engraved decorative border along the rim around the front, a later tapered bail at the top, and a glass window over plaited hair on the undecorated back. A metal pin and stand were added to the back in the early twentieth century. |
