Description |
Engraved American powder horn owned by Daniel Allen, an officer in the Connecticut Continental Line, made at Roxbury, Massachusetts, ca. 1776. Two-thirds of the horn is a light brown surface decorated with deer and other animals, as well as geometric designs. The phrases "Kill or Be Kild Roxbury" and "Liberty or Death JJ" appear on separate lines. The other one-third of the horn is a plain dark brown surface tapering towards the narrow end of the horn. It is carved with a raised scalloped ring in the middle and a scalloped border where it meets the engraved portion of the horn. The wide end of the horn is covered with a dark wood butt cap that has a rectangular metal loop in the center and that is secured to the horn with iron nails. |
