Description |
Circular bronze Comitia Americana series medal titled "Daniel Morgan at the Cowpens." Struck by the U.S. Mint, 20th century, after designs by Augustin Dupré (1748-1833). Daniel Morgan (1736-1802) was a brigadier general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and original member of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia. The obverse features two full-length figures dominating a scene in the center. An allegorical figure of America as a Native American princess, wearing a headress, skirt, and quiver, stands at the left and places a laurel wreath on the head of Daniel Morgan, who bows slightly. Morgan wears a military uniform and holds in his proper right hand a sword pointed downward with its tip on the ground. The background is filled with a trophy of arms featuring flags, cannon, and a shield. The inscription "DANIELI MORGAN DUCI EXERCITUS / COMITIA AMERICANA" (The American Congress to General Daniel Morgan) appears in two parts above and below the scene. The reverse features a battle scene depicting advancing American troops at the right, led by Daniel Morgan on horseback and two standard bearers, and retreating British troops at the left. In the foreground, an Indian man attacks a dismounted cavalry soldier. The inscription "VICTORIA LIBERTATIS VINDEX" (Victory, the vindicator of liberty) appears above the scene. The exergue reads "FVGATIS CAPTIS AVT CAESIS / AD COWPENS HOSTIEVS / XVII. JAN. MDCCLXXXI" (The enemy put to flight, taken, or slain, at the Cowpens, Jan. 17, 1781) and "DUPRE INV ET F." |
