Description |
Waist-length, oil-on-canvas portrait of James DeLancey (1747-1804), a loyalist officer during the Revolutionary War, attributed to John Durand, ca. 1778-1782. Subject's gaze is turned towards the viewer, but his torso turned a quarter towards the proper right side. His proper right hand is tucked into his frock coat opening below the sword belt across his chest, while his proper left hand rests on his hip. He wears a military uniform of a red frock coat with blue facings, circular metal buttons, and two plain epaulets; a white stock, shirt, and cuffs; a buff sword belt worn diagonally across his chest over his coat with an oval plate inscribed "GR"; buff breeches; and a red sash tied around his waist. A sword hilt is visible in the lower right. Plain brown and red shaded background. Unframed. |
