New York Grand Model A Ebonized baby grand piano made by Steinway & Sons, New York, 1898, and purchased from retailer M. Steinert & Sons, Boston, ca. 1898-1902, for the Anderson House Ballroom. Custom mahogany case is inlaid with quartered panels of tulip wood and heavily ornamented with gilt trim. Six square tapered legs with Ionic capitals and gilded festoons are joined by a scrolled stretcher. A circular cartouche of laurel leaves over the keyboard contains the monogram "I L A" (no longer present). Three metal foot pedals. Hinged cover raises to reveal the interior of the instrument, which bears the piano's serial number (90672) and Steinway markings. With a matching piano bench (M.1938.263.2). |
